The impact of arrangers Bonana Maiga and Ibrahima Soumano demands special notice. . . . Guinean Ibrahima Soumano is a bala player and first-class guitarist who is behind many of the arrangements of Guinean singers in the 1990s. His strongly guitar-oriented arrangements retain much of the Guinean flavor and continue the direction of shedding foreign (Cuban and European) influences for local ones. Arrangements by both Soumano and Maiga can be heard on Sekouba "Bambino" diabate (1997-disc).

p. 295

In Guinea there is a special relation between the bala and the guitar. Many guitar players started out on the bala, and many bala players also play the guitar. Some musicians, such as Ibrahima Soumano, Kemo Kouyate, and Keletigui Diabate, have even recorded on both instruments.
